Microsoft updates Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Validation Tool, LegitCheckControl.dll, to version 1.7.69.2. In fact, the v1.7.69.2 of WGA Validation ActiveX control has packaged into Windows Vista SP1 when it’s released on March 18 2008. Subsequently, on April 1 2008, this version of LegitCheckControl.dll, together with WGA Notifications files, WgaTray.exe and WgaLogon.dll, is been deployed to Windows XP, updating WGA v1.7.69.1 which been released just few days ago.

Unfortunately, hackers, especially Team ETHO managed to crack the WGA genuine Windows validation process again. The patched LegitCheckControl.dll will allow users to bypass genuine validation check to download bonus or value added programs that restricted to genuine Windows users from Microsoft Download Center, Windows Update and Microsoft Update. Team ETH0 claims that the patch is 100% working on both Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Vista SP1, and probably on Windows Server 2003 and 2003 too. The cracked WgaTray.exe and WgaLogon.dll also remove the non-genuine or pirated copy of Windows warning message.

Microsoft has removed Reduced Functionality Mode in Windows Vista SP1, and instead opt to less punitive option of just giving counterfeit version repetitive warning message and reminder to activate the system. However, Microsoft also restrict pirated system from getting free software program and non-critical updates by using WGA. Now that the latest version of WGA is cracked, it means that the bonus offer for genuine Windows user now shared equally with non-genuine user, who however has disadvantage of more inconvenience.

Microsoft Key Management Service (KMS) is a part of Microsoft Volume Activation 2.0 which in itself a part of an anti-piracy feature of Software Protection Platform, first used in Windows Vista. KMS server allows corporate and enterprise users to easily manage the activation of Windows machine by using KMS key, and protect the volume license keys. When initially released, KMS host is only able to be setup in Windows Vista computer. Now, companies that do not want to build a Windows Vista server can opt to deploy KMS on a Windows Server 2003 machine.

Microsoft provides downloadable package of Key Management Service for Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later that turns a Windows Server 2003 machine into KMS server. The package supports Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with Service Pack 1 or later. Both 32-bit and 64-bit are supported.

Install the KMS Package

Once downloaded, the KMS package for Windows 2003 Server can be easily installed. Simply double click to launch the Key Management Service for Windows 2003 executable (contained in the zip archive) and accept the License Agreement.

Enable a KMS Host and Activate Online

Unlike KMS in Windows Vista, there is no grace period in KMS on Windows 2003 Server. So, the KMS must be activated online as soon as possible after installation to enable the KMS function.

1. Ensure your computer is able to connect to the Internet.
2. Log on to the computer with administrator privileges and launch a command prompt.
3. Run the following script to install your KMS key:

   cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk <KMS Key>

4. Run the following script to activate the KMS host with Microsoft using online activation:

   cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato

5. If no error was reported, the KMS host is now ready to be used by KMS clients for activation. Additional configuration is optional and will usually not be required. You can confirm your KMS license state and settings by running:

   cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /dli

Inside the downloaded package, there is also a supplemental guide which contains information on how to activate the KMS offline.

Most of the functions and usage instructions for KMS for Windows Server 2003 are identical to KMS for Windows Vista. The supplemental guide will provide more details on deployment and configuration options available. There are only some minor differences between the two versions of KMS as listed below:

1. The KMS for Windows Server 2003 service (sppsvc) is installed as a package over the existing operating system. Installation is based on the familiar Software Update Installer and is fast and easy. KMS can be removed using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. KMS is built-in in Windows Vista, no extra installation needed.
2. There is no GUI support for the Windows Server 2003 service. Therefore, all interaction with KMS must be done using the built-in script, slmgr.vbs. Notably, SLUI.exe, which in Windows Vista is the recommended tool to map error codes to descriptive text, is not supported. Since nearly all KMS interactions require the use of the slmgr.vbs script, the lack of a GUI has little impact.
3. The Windows Vista KMS key is used to activate the KMS host functionality only. This has no affect on the activation or other fuctions of the underlying server operating system. Windows Server 2003 may need to be separately activated. (Volume and OEM versions of Window Server 2003 do not require activation.) It is also important to note that the KMS service for Windows Server 2003 and the corresponding KMS key only support the activation of volume editions of the Windows Vista operating system.
4. Although both online (Internet) and offline (telephone) activation of the KMS service are supported, offline activation of KMS for Windows Server 2003 can only be done using the slmgr.vbs script.
5. The Windows 2003 version of KMS will be in the Unlicensed state immediately after it is installed. There is no out-of-box grace period, because the KMS host must be (and remain) activated in order for KMS clients to use it to activate. Once the KMS key has been installed and the KMS host has been activated, the license state will change to Licensed.

Another crack or hack to activate Windows Vista is by replacing 2 files in Windows Vista Final RTM version with the same files from Windows Vista RC2 (only from build 5840, similar files from build 5744 or earlier won’t work), and then use Windows Vista product key or registration key released and distributed via CPP (Customer Preview Program) intended for Windows Vista betas and release candidate to activate Windows Vista RTM Build 6000. (it’s actually the same technique or method that used to install and activate pre-RTM Windows Vista such as build 5840).

1. Install Windows Vista Final by using default product key (no product key entered).
2. Download the crack Windows.Vista.FINAL.Crack.raVen.rar or Windows.Vista.RTM.Activation.Crack-iND.rar or Microsoft.Windows.Vista.RTM.PROPER.Activation.Crack-ReeBSaW or Windows.Vista.RTM.dEnoura.Crack.rar (all contains but packed by different crackers), and extract the compressed file.
3. Navigate to \Windows\System32\Licensing\pkeyconfig’ folder.
4. Locate and right-click on ‘pkeyconfig.xrm-ms’ file.
5. Click on Properties, then open Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit, and click on Administrators.
6. Click OK and close the Properties window.
7. Right click again on ‘pkeyconfig.xrm-ms’ file, and select Properties to open Properties window.
8. Open Security > Advanced > Edit, then select Administrators and click Edit.
9. Click on “Full Control”, then click OK and close the file Properties.
10. Restart the computer and boot up in the Safe Mode.
11. Replace and overwrite ‘pkeyconfig.xrm-ms’ using the same file extracted from the downloaded package.
12. Go to Start -> Run (or press Windows + R keys) to start Run box.
13. Type in “services.msc” to launch Services (can also be launched from Control Panel).
14. Find and locate the “Software Licensing” service. If it’s running, press on Stop button to stop the service.
15. Navigate and browse to \Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\ Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    folder.
16. Overwrite and replace the tokens.dat with the same file from the extracted package. You may need to take ownership and full control of the file by following step 5 - 9.
17. Reboot and restart the computer, and bootup in normal mode.
18. Go to Start > Help & Support, and search for “Activate” by using search menu, then click on the third topic “Activate Windows on this Computer” to start Windows Activation. Alternatively go to Start and type in slui.exe into the Search Bar and press Enter to go to Windows Activation window.
19. Input any Windows Vista product key or registration key or CD key from RC1 or RC2 or Beta 1 or Beta 2 or any other released by Microsoft and leaked to Internet to activate the Windows Vista. If you don’t have any product key, sign up and register for Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) to receive a valid and legal product key. Or download the Windows.Vista.RTM.Activation.Crack-iND.rar which contains a RC product key in the archive.
20. Run the genuine and activated Vista.

There are also some hackers who combined the above 2 methods to stop the Windows Vista Product Activation countdown timer and then to activate Windows Vista by using cracked license files for RC1 and RC2.

1. Restart the PC and boot into BIOS.
2. Set the date to year 2099.
3. Create and format the partition or hard disk that will be used to fresh install new Windows Vista.
4. Next, install VISTA, do not enter any serial number so that user has 30-day window period for activation as trial demo that valid till 2099 instead of only working for 3 days due to illegal, ban, pirated, expired or not working and not genuine license key.
5. After install, follow the Vista WPA crack procedures as immediate above method to activate the Windows Vista so that it’s as if genuine and legal.

Apparently not only Windows Vista Ultimate can be activated with KMS server, Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows Vista Home Premium activation can also be cracked with the same KMS server hack. The trick is still the same, that is by replacing the two original files related to licensing and activation tokens.dat and pkeyconfig.xrm-ms with the one from Windows Vista Business edition, and thus effectively convert or turn the edition of Windows Vista installed to Business edition with its corresponding product key which can be activated with a KMS host.
